about

All wild animals in one moshpit - you can hear both screams and whispers, man's and woman's vocal, punk'y melodies and blastbeats.
Breaknecking fastcore meets sludge, ritualistic percussion and mantra chants. It's all improvised, but expect a lot of structure and small melody hooks.

rateyourmusic.com review by mihr:
"Take a pinch of early Naked City, underline it with Dropdead's urgency, and let it coalesce into the offspring of both Ruins and Химера [Chimera]. This might be the off-kilter result. What strikes me about this album—claiming to be entirely improvised, save for rudimentary prior preparation—is not as much the intensity and chaotic shenanigans, but rather the clarity of it all. Unlike similar albums where singular elements tend to clash together into indiscriminate noise, Во благо злу is very much the opposite, and is all the better for it."

disagreement.net review by Pascal Thiel:
"Most music tries to adhere to a certain genre, but then there are those bands or collectives that just do their very own thing, without caring about any conventions. Zlurad, which according to Google Translate means spiteful in the Croatian language, are actually a band from Russia. The foundation of their music, if you dare call it music, is drums and bass guitars, with several people screaming all over it, and some guy who can’t really play the trumpet playing the trumpet.

Their album For The Good Of Evil contains eight songs. Four of these are short outbursts of noise, always below two minutes, two songs have more normal lengths of about three to four minutes, and then there are two more expansive pieces running between eight and ten minutes, making for a good half hour of ear-shattering noise.

How would describe these sounds? Power violence comes to mind, but also free jazz, with some experimental noise constructs thrown in for good measure. Looking at the photos of their live shows, Zlurad seem to be a fun bunch on stage, giving me the impression that their routine is some kind of nihilist Dada stage performance. I have been listening to the album several times now, and although half of what they do seems improvised, there are some intriguing parts, especially during the long tracks that feel as if a narrative has been inserted into the music. It’s also on their long songs where they don’t always act in hyperspeed, but allow for electronic effects, probably from the pedal board, and atonal singing to add depth to their music. Those moments, it feels as if Jello Biafra’s more daring bands, like Tumor Circus or Lard, trying to emulate the psychedelic jazz sounds of Soft Machine circa 1970, or maybe like a Russian outlier of Japanese noise rock band Boredoms with their inimitable vocalist Yamantaka Eye.

I did enjoy For The Good Of Evil more than I expected, but also have to concede that it’s a very taxing listening experience. Also forgive me for not naming any songs, but everything here, from band name to album and song titles, are written in the Cyrillic alphabet, and in the end, this short album works best when heard in a single go. If you can imagine a sonic universe that has been birthed from power violence and free jazz parents, by all means, give it a go. If you like harmonies in your music, you’re definitely not among the target audience. "

rateyourmusic.com review by Jaymclayn:
"Zlurad’s “A Blessing or a Curse (For the Good of Evil)” quickly establishes what you have to yourself in for. Opening track ‘Merry-go-round’ is a mere 30 seconds long and flies by not really with urgency but in a manic disarray. It is relentless but not about it’s ‘heaviness’ the focus is much more on the whoopy and the doopy. Sounding like a glorious cross between naked city and za! I am immediately hyped for what follows.
As the album continues the vocals swap between sillier and truly gruelling. It’s both difficult and fun I equal doses. When the sax and speed come in together I think of a wolf tearing apart a carcass in fast forward. What would usually be quite brutal enters the realms of silly with the speed, which makes it more enjoyable. It certainly isn’t the most polished and occasionally the silliness enters an area of dullness or predictability or eye roll, but As a whole the falling down the stairs at different speeds that this band delivers has many moments that drop-a-jaw. ‘Mstislav Vražák’ again furthers the levels of silliness, when one dynamic comes in which seems more metal or power violence or punk influenced it’s quickly counter balanced with a weird jazz lick or contradictory effect. Despite being scratchy and lo-fi I like hearing such a manic and rapid album not have a focus on sounding heavy. It allowed the percussion to drive the music more rather than be relegated to a background element, and it doesn’t glorify a beat-down as the main focus of the songs, with wild transitions and bridges seeming to be what Zlurad what to highlight within their sound over anything else. Many of the genres Zlurad are mixing often hold heaviness up as the ultimate goal and also a prerequisite for the genre. It’s honestly very refreshing hearing music come from these directions but the focus in different areas. I had similar feelings when I first heard the band ‘Guardian Alien’. Where ‘ogre king’ immediately put me off with the riff, it’s korn-esque whoopy beatboxy shouty vocals bring everything together to a fun child like swing. It’s energising! I can imagine a lot of comparisons being made to John zorns music but the ‘wackiness’ that punctuated the music of zorn isn’t as present here. Zlurad can be silly but not wacky. It doesn’t feel like it has the ceremony of wackiness, it is not dressed as a clown it just acts like one sometimes. The silliness is certainly upped though by ‘The Way to the Darkside’ which sounds like a bunch of kids laughing at each other whilst they get chased by bees and I loved it. This is soon countered by the most aggressive song on the album ‘I Have No Place for You Here on My Broom’ which begins in a huge plast of dense pasta ball rolling down a hill collecting grass and dog shit. Soon the performers reveal they are enjoying themselves, a bunch of ducks come and start eating the ball once it becomes stationary, only for the ball to reveal it sentience. Awakening again and rolling all over the ducks, collecting and absorbing them as they choke to death on pasta. Although I didn’t think I’d like this song as much when it started I really dug the way it progressed.
‘Schitzoid’ is the albums longest track, because of this it has the most missteps but it also seems to have the most fun vocally. One part made me think of dogs in a line ordered by size all eating each other. Many canine thoughts entered during my listen to this album. The track makes the most of the slow pace mid-song and I like how the textural focus changed compared to the rest of the album, but transitions into it rather than just going for it and creating a jarring disparity. This song more than the rest feels like the improvised element of the music is embraced more. At many points in the album it feels like a core song with only a few members improvising over the top, but this also I think sonically works well for keeping the audiences attention and not being too exhausting of a listen, this track feels a lot freer though despite having a rocky jammy core. It goes through a lot of movements whilst going on a walk down and up a hill of tempo. I think if you entered this expecting a free improv album you’d be disappointed, this isn’t that. The focus here seems to be on fast weird esoteric punk/metal genre-mashups that eschewes the humourless approach so many bands within those genres have, instead embracing the freaky deaky areas of jazz and free music and allowing it to twinge and party with what they’ve created. A lot of corrupting elements are thrown at each other and much of the joy comes from how they actually end up complimenting one-another, the fact that a lot of this is improvised I think is perhaps the reason. I think I forgive and relate more to what is urgent rather than what is considered. This album is urgent. It feels new and it feels powerful whilst also not being dominating. It feels like it has no direct considered message and relishes in ‘stupid’ whilst still feeling smart and radical in what it is in its actuality. I feel like this album had a lot of potential to annoy me, and it didn’t. It kept winning me over in cycles and I can’t wait to listen again."

Russian sadwave.com review & interview by Alexander Tokarev:

Russian vk.com/moisture review:

gbhbl.com review by Carl 'The Disc' Fisher:
"How on earth do you describe this album to someone who hasn’t experienced the chaos for themselves? It’s an utter mess of noise, that sounds like a couple of bulls were thrown into a room alongside instruments. From the moment the first track begins many will just turn it off as it’s near unlistenable. However, it deserves more time as a bit of structure begins to rear its head, order is found amongst the chaotic shattering and it slowly begins to make sense and become kind of enjoyable.

Don’t get me wrong, it’s still an absolute insane record filled with revolting yelps, screams and roars. As well as uncultured punkiness, filth covered sludge and cannibalistic drums. A truly unique experience that really needs a couple of listens to appreciate but few will be able to even manage even one."

"I often seem to return to John Zorn’s Naked City whenever something comes my way that I don’t fully understand. Not that I am the greatest fan of John Zorn, but because that is by far the weirdest stuff I have ever heard, beside Painkiller. Until know. Злурад is by far the weirdest i have heard in a very long while. I don’t even know how to describe this, other than pure fucking noise. They seem to have no boundaries or even self-control. Try imagining grindcore meeting free form jazz meeting noisecore meeting pure chaos and you might get a picture on paper what this sounds like. Hearing it is so much more. I have no fucking clue as to how to grade this. some part of me want to give this a minus 5 but another part of me want to give it a weak 3 for effort. I think I’ll just leave this one a blank one. I don’t even know if I am any better off having heard this."

Dutch darkentries.be review by Henk Vereecken:
"7/10

Ook “Король Людоед

German www.betreutesproggen.de review by Carsten Agthe:
Mit einer Spielzeit von etwas mehr als dreißig Minuten geriet „Во благо злу“ („A Blessing Or A Curse“) recht übersichtlich.

Bewertung: 5/15 Punkten (CA 5, KR 9)"

hatemeditations.com review:
"Now this is a hard one to write about. It’s not strictly speaking metal, but then again it’s not strictly speaking even music. Sitting somewhere between freeform grindcore, powerviolence, jazz, and I guess what you could call ritualistic chanting. This is all thrown into a blender, resulting in an abrasive, almost unbearable listening experience. Multiple vocal tracks work their way through agonising moans and refrains that sound more pained than angry. These are kept in check by the drums, which set the intensity and drama of the work more than they do the rhythm. Static noise, what sounds like brass, and bass, all add additional layers of meat to fill the gaps.

Upon repeated listens – as with much experimental music of a similar density – one can discern the beginnings of structure beneath the chaos. This is determined by the drums, which entirely dictate the mood and intensity of the vocal tracks. As a result, when conventional rhythms and tome signatures do manifest out of the chaos it feels all the more rewarding for the listener. After a period of complete disorientation, frustration, even panic, something familiar, however primitive, makes itself known, and the brain issues a reward.

As one cannot discuss anything as civilised as key, melody, harmony, discussion must stick to mood, timbre, impressions. The resulting experience is akin to witnessing the birth of order from chaos; the primordial soup of music. In order to rediscover on an intuitive rather than an intellectual level what the attraction and purpose of music is, we must destructively forget all our preconceived ideas and conventions about what makes a good piece of music. Out of the rubble of this eviscerated music, we relearn the value of narrative structure in composition. The value of basic components like rhythm or melody is not simply intrinsic. Where they are placed within a piece of music and why is every bit as important.

It may be the sonic equivalent of hitting yourself over the head with a hammer repeatedly just for the relief when you stop, but it is a solid reminder of the endurance of narrative structure through the lens of improvised music."

Maciej Lewenstein review:
"Extremely energetic and expressive rock group from Russia. As they write on their Bandcamp page: "Are you feeling hot, stuffy, and sweaty these days? Turn on this Zlurad record a bit louder, rip your clothes off, become an animal. The energy of this noise-core recording should be enough for you to run to the nearest river, sink in, and cool off. On the way to the river, you might feel a need to bite a citizen or maybe even grab him and make a Human-sandwich! Resist this urge, 'cause your goal is to get to the river.

A true revelation from the Russian avantgarde rock scene: npise-copre, punk-copre, free jazz rock: you name it. "Kolbasa" is really an EP, with five tracks, "Rityan 1-5". Perhaps the most interesting aspect of this group is in rhythmic structures, amazing expression, and vocals, sounding like Frank Zappa's Mothers of Invention in the XXIst century. "Vo blago zlu" is also an EP, continuing the same concepts, maybe even more radically. Amazing collective vocal, amazing rhythms and winds. I never heard something like that. Wonderful stuff!!!"

mangorave.blogspot.com review by Raphael Lukas:
(Russian: "For the Good of Evil") by Moscow's Злурад (Zlurad) is actually not that easy. Imagine your favourite 1980s Hardcore Punk musicians meeting up with a Jazz composer. As they decide to enjoy some extra strong LSD in their rehearsal room, one of them suddenly says 'Let's jam!' while the acid begins to kick. Once they leave the room, they realize that the world outside of their rehearsal room has been destroyed by a giant asteroid, so they go back in and start recording."

progressor.net review by Kev Rowland:
"Now, I enjoy experimental improvised music as much (in fact, probably more) as the next person, but here we have an album which really does sound like a group of people who are thrown into a room and told to make a noise until they decide they have enough material for an album. While drummer Andrew Kim sound as if he would be happier in a grindcore act, and bassist Dmitry “Dimon” Kuzovlev (who also provides vocals) knows what he is doing, I am not sure the same can be said about Roman “Karandash” Karandaev (trumpet, vocals), Ivan “Vanish” Khvorostukhin (horn, congas, vocals) and Violetta Postnova (vocals). They sound as if they are in pain a lot of the time, so I wonder if they were listening to playback while performing, as that would make sense, as while I made my way through this a couple of times, I imagine a few seconds would be enough for most people. Possibly the idea is for it to be played as a torture device? Released in 2019, I do not think I will ever be playing this again. For those who think experimental avant-garde is too mainstream."
